Trex install manual

Trex Universal Hidden Fastener — 90 clips per box, 50 sqft coverage at 16″ joist o.c. Required reading: trex.com/install. The clip nests into the board's edge groove and screws into the joist for a clean screw-free surface.

Heat caution — Tiki Torch runs HOT in full sun

Trex Lineage technical data

Dark Trex colors (Tiki Torch, hex #7B3F1F) measure 160–175°F at the surface in direct sun on a 90°F day. Consider switching to a Lineage color (Rainier, Carmel, Biscayne, Jasper) — Trex's heat-mitigation cap runs 20–30°F cooler at the same color depth.

How to use

How to use the deck calculator in 7 steps.

  1. 1

    Pick a tier

Naturals (premium scalloped, beachy palette, 5 colors) or Basics (value scalloped, 3 colors, Home Depot stocked). Both carry the same 25-yr fade & stain warranty; Naturals adds ~$0.65/lf for the upgraded palette + cap formula.

  2. 2

    Choose a color

Naturals (Beach Dune, Toasted Sand, Foggy Wharf, Coastal Bluff, Rocky Harbor) or Basics (Saddle, Clam Shell, Beach Dune). All Enhance colors are intentionally lighter shades — the scalloped underside doesn't insulate well, so dark Enhance colors run hot. For dark colors, upgrade to Transcend or pick a Lineage option.

  3. 3

    Enter dimensions + pattern

Length × width in feet. Pattern: parallel (7% waste, 1.0× labor) is recommended for Enhance — picture-frame and diagonal are technically supported but the scalloped underside makes them harder to look clean.

  4. 4

    Pick a fastener

Face-screw with Cortex color-matched plugs is the default for Enhance (the scalloped underside is incompatible with TUHF hidden-clip on the value tier). 50 plugs/$36 pack, ~50 sqft per pack.

  5. 5

    Pick a railing

Trex Enhance Railing (composite, $62/lf installed — value-tier kit, Charcoal Black or Classic White, square balusters) is the natural pair. Trex Signature aluminum is overkill but compatible; no railing on decks below 30″.

  6. 6

    Add lighting (optional)

Trex DeckLighting post-cap + riser LED kit + 100W transformer. Enhance posts aren't designed for integrated lighting, so the calc uses surface-mount LED post caps instead of integrated.

  7. 7

Wood, composite, or PVC?

Three honest paths. Composite wins the 25-year math for most homeowners, wood wins on upfront cost, and PVC is unbeatable around water. Each card below answers in one glance — recalculate the bill of materials by clicking a brand in the picker above.

How we calculate

How DeckMath calculates this — IRC 2021 sources.

The Trex Enhance Calculator is the value-line deep-cut for homeowners shopping Trex on a budget. Enhance is Trex's entry-tier composite — scalloped underside (lighter board weight, easier handling), Home Depot stocked, 25-yr fade & stain warranty. This calc breaks Enhance into its two sub-tiers: Naturals (premium scalloped — Beach Dune, Toasted Sand, Foggy Wharf, Coastal Bluff, Rocky Harbor — $3.95/lf) and Basics (value scalloped — Saddle, Clam Shell, Beach Dune — $3.30/lf). You get a real BoM with face-screw + Cortex plug count, optional Enhance Railing kit, optional Trex DeckLighting, and a 2-tier auto-comparison so you can see exactly what the Naturals premium costs on your deck. Pricing reflects 2026-Q1 retail from Home Depot + Lowe's.

IRC references

  • IRC 2021 R507 — Decks
  • IRC 2021 R312 — Guards (railing required when deck > 30″)
  • Trex Enhance install manual — face-screw spacing (1 per board per joist, predrill required)
  • Trex Enhance warranty terms — 25-yr fade & stain (Naturals + Basics)

Per-LF retail prices reflect 2026-Q1 Trex Enhance pricing at Home Depot + Lowe's + Trex Pro Platinum channel. Cortex plug specs from Trex install manuals. 25-yr fade & stain warranty per Trex Enhance published terms. Scalloped board weight + thermal characteristics from Trex Enhance technical data sheets.

Deck-board linear feet
rows × length × (1 + waste%)

Rows = ceil(width × 12 ÷ (5.5 + 0.125)) — Enhance boards face 5.5″ with 1/8″ install gap. Default 7% waste for parallel pattern.

Cortex pack count
packs = ceil(area ÷ 50)

Enhance defaults to face-screw + Cortex color-matched plug. Each Cortex pack ships 50 plugs and covers ~50 sqft.

Naturals vs Basics premium
naturals_lf = basics_lf × 1.20

Naturals carries a ~20% premium per LF over Basics ($3.95 vs $3.30) for the upgraded color palette + premium cap formula. On a 320 sqft deck the materials premium is roughly $260.

Composite labor premium
$35/sqft × 1.20 × pattern × shape × region

Enhance face-screw installs are 20% slower than face-screwed PT (predrilling + Cortex plug insertion). Slightly faster than TUHF hidden-clip installs. Pattern + shape compound.

Enhance scalloped weight
approx 50 lb per 16-ft board (vs 65 lb capped Transcend)

Enhance boards are scalloped (cavities on the underside) which reduces weight by ~25%. Easier for solo DIY installs. Trade-off: the cavities can trap dirt/leaves that need periodic cleaning.

People also ask

Deck calculator questions, answered.

  • Naturals is the premium Enhance tier — five colors in a beachy palette (Beach Dune, Toasted Sand, Foggy Wharf, Coastal Bluff, Rocky Harbor) and an upgraded cap formula with better fade resistance. Basics is the value tier — three colors (Saddle, Clam Shell, Beach Dune) and a simpler cap. Both share the same scalloped underside, same 25-yr fade & stain warranty, same face-screw install method. The materials price difference is about $0.65/lf — on a 320 sqft deck that's roughly $260 total.

  • Three reasons: (1) scalloped underside reduces material content by ~25%, lowering manufacturing cost; (2) limited color palette (5 + 3 colors vs Transcend's 14) reduces SKU inventory cost; (3) the cap formula is simpler than Transcend's multi-tonal cap. Enhance still carries Trex's 25-yr fade & stain warranty and uses the same cap-on-recycled-core construction. It's a real Trex deck at value pricing — not a stripped-down product.

  • $36-58 per square foot installed depending on tier + pattern + complexity. A 16×20 (320 sqft) Enhance Basics deck with Enhance Railing and 4 stairs lands around $15,500 nationally; the same deck in Enhance Naturals with Trex Signature aluminum rail lands around $22,000. Multiply by ~0.92× South or ~1.28× West Coast. Calculator outputs project-low to project-high range.

  • Enhance is right when (a) budget is the primary driver, (b) you're OK with the scalloped underside (DIYers love it, some contractors don't), and (c) the lighter color palette works for your design. Trex Select adds about $0.55/lf over Enhance Naturals — gives you a fully-capped solid board, broader color palette (Madeira, Pebble Grey, Saddle, Winchester Grey, Woodland Brown), and slightly better impact resistance. On a 320 sqft deck the Select upgrade is roughly $215 in materials. Most homeowners who can afford Select pick Select; Enhance is for budget-first projects or solo DIY builds where the lighter weight matters.

  • No — TUHF requires grooved board edges, and Enhance boards aren't grooved. Enhance defaults to face-screw + Cortex color-matched plug. The visual is still clean (the Cortex plug matches the board color tightly) and the install is faster than TUHF for first-time DIYers. If you want hidden fasteners, you have to upgrade to Trex Select or Transcend (both grooved).

  • Yes — Trex Enhance Naturals + Basics both carry the 25-year limited residential fade & stain warranty. Structural warranty is also 25 years. Transferable one-time to a future homeowner at no charge. Register at trex.com/warranty within 30 days of install. Note: warranty covers fade and stain — color preferences ("it looks too washed-out compared to the showroom") are not warranty claims. Always order a free sample from trex.com before committing.

  • Enhance's scalloped underside means less mass per board, so it absorbs and re-radiates heat faster than capped composite or solid-core composite. Dark Enhance colors can hit 175°F+ surface temperatures in 90°F full sun — uncomfortable barefoot. The Enhance palette is intentionally lighter (Beach Dune, Toasted Sand, Foggy Wharf — all heat rating 3) to mitigate this. For dark deck aesthetics, upgrade to Transcend Lineage (heat-mitigation cap) or AZEK Vintage Mahogany (PVC stays cooler).

  • Yes — Enhance Basics is Home Depot's primary Trex line (Saddle, Clam Shell, Beach Dune stocked). Enhance Naturals is partially stocked at Home Depot (Beach Dune, Toasted Sand always; the other three are usually special-order from Trex Pro). Lowe's stocks more Naturals colors year-round. Both retailers offer Pro Desk pricing for contractor accounts.

  • No — Trex Enhance is rated for 16″ joist on-center maximum (perpendicular to the boards) under AWC DCA-6. The scalloped underside actually reduces span capacity slightly vs solid-core composite. For installs over older 24″ OC framing, add sister joists every 8 ft. The only composite rated for 24″ OC is Deckorators Voyage + Vault (mineral-based composite, DCA-6 exception).

  • Once you set length × width + pattern + stairs, the calculator prices the exact same deck across both Enhance tiers (Naturals vs Basics) using each tier's per-LF retail. The side-by-side table shows total range + per-sqft for each. Tap either to switch the calc to that tier; the color picker resets to that tier's first color. Fastest way to see what the Naturals premium costs on your specific deck dimensions.
