How to use

How to use the deck calculator in 6 steps.

  1. 1

    Pick a Deckorators line

    Voyage (mineral flagship, multi-width board option, 50-yr structural), Vault (mineral mid-tier, broader color palette, 50-yr), Trailhead (value entry, Home Depot stocked, 25-yr). Voyage + Vault both carry the 24″ on-center joist rating that lets you skip every other joist on a remodel.

  2. 2

    Choose a color

    6 colors in Voyage, 4 in Vault, 3 in Trailhead. Mineral-core decks run 35°F cooler at the surface than wood-fiber composites at the same tone — the dark Carbonized Voyage stays under 145°F in 90°F sun (a comparable dark Trex Enhance reads 170°F+).

  3. 3

    Enter dimensions

    Length × width in feet. Pattern matters: parallel (7% waste, 1.0× labor), picture-frame (12%, 1.18×), diagonal 45° (15%, 1.12×). The calculator quantizes board count using Deckorators' stocked lengths (12, 16, 20 ft for Voyage/Vault; 12, 16 for Trailhead).

  4. 4

    Pick fastener system

    HiddenLink hidden-clip is the default — 175 clips/box, $145/box, ~70 sqft coverage at 16″ OC (denser than CONCEALoc/TUHF). ScrewLock (color-matched plug system, 50/pack, $42/pack) is the face-screw alternative.

  5. 5

    Add accessories

    Drink-Rail Top (top-mount decking face on railing as bar shelf, $42/lf installed) and Deckorators Lighting (post + riser LEDs + 100W transformer + low-voltage wiring) are toggles that add to the BoM and the all-in.

Wood, composite, or PVC?

Three honest paths. Composite wins the 25-year math for most homeowners, wood wins on upfront cost, and PVC is unbeatable around water. Each card below answers in one glance — recalculate the bill of materials by clicking a brand in the picker above.

How we calculate

How DeckMath calculates this — IRC 2021 sources.

The Deckorators Deck Calculator is the brand-deep estimator for the homeowner who wants Deckorators' mineral-based composite. Eovations mineral-core technology is the distinct engineering story — boards rated for 24″ joist on-center (the DCA-6 1.5× span exception, vs every other composite's 16″ cap), 25% lighter weight, mineral-impervious to moisture absorption, and 35°F cooler surface than wood-fiber composite at the same color. This calc covers all 3 lines: Voyage (flagship multi-width 3.5/5.5/7.25″, 50-yr structural), Vault (mid-tier solid 5.5″, 50-yr structural), Trailhead (value entry, 25-yr structural). You get the right HiddenLink clip-box count, optional Drink-Rail Top, optional Deckorators Lighting, and a 3-line auto-comparison across the same deck. Pricing reflects 2026-Q1 retail from Lowe's Pro + Deckorators Pro dealer channel.

  • AWC DCA-6 — Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide
  • Deckorators HiddenLink install manual — clip spacing + 24″ OC eligibility table

Per-LF retail prices reflect 2026-Q1 Deckorators pricing at Lowe's Pro + Deckorators Pro dealer channel. HiddenLink + ScrewLock specs from Deckorators install manuals. 24″ joist OC eligibility per AWC DCA-6 + Deckorators technical data sheets. Heat-reduction claim from independent third-party solar-reflectance testing.

Deck-board linear feet
rows × length × (1 + waste%)

Rows = ceil(width × 12 ÷ (5.5 + 0.125)) — Deckorators face is 5.5″ with 1/8″ install gap (Voyage multi-width uses average effective face). Waste % is pattern-driven.

HiddenLink box count
boxes = floor(total_clips ÷ 175)

Each HiddenLink box ships 175 clips and covers ~70 sqft at 16″ joist on-center. Total clips = boards × (length × 12 ÷ 16 + 1). Remainder priced at $1.00 each as loose clips.

ScrewLock pack count
packs = ceil(area ÷ 50)

Each ScrewLock pack ships 50 color-matched plugs and covers ~50 sqft. Used when fastener mode = ScrewLock (face-screw with hidden plug aesthetic).

24″ joist OC advisory
if line.rated24OcSpan then joist_count ≈ length × 12 / 24 + 1

Voyage and Vault carry the DCA-6 exception for 24″ joist on-center spacing — fewer joists vs every other composite. Calculator flags this on the compliance badge so users can budget framing savings when re-decking over standard 16″ framing.

Composite labor premium
$35/sqft × 1.25 × pattern × shape × region

Composite installs are 25% slower than face-screwed PT (clip-system sequencing). Pattern + shape multipliers compound. Region multiplier from RSMeans 2026-Q1.

People also ask

Deck calculator questions, answered.

  • Deckorators uses an Eovations mineral-core technology — basically a mineral-impregnated polymer composite instead of the wood-fiber-plus-plastic recipe used by Trex and TimberTech PRO. Three practical consequences: (1) boards are 25% lighter so they're easier to handle solo; (2) the core doesn't absorb water so the boards don't swell or mold; (3) the line is rated for 24″ joist on-center spacing under the DCA-6 exception — every other composite is locked at 16″ OC max. Surface temperature is also ~35°F cooler at the same color tone vs wood-fiber composite.

  • Standard composite decking under AWC DCA-6 must be installed on joists no more than 16 inches apart on center, perpendicular to the boards. Deckorators Voyage and Vault carry an engineering exception that lets them sit on joists at 24″ OC — so if you're re-decking over older 24″-OC framing (common on pre-2000 decks) you don't have to add sister joists. It's the only mainstream composite with this rating. Trailhead does NOT carry this exception, so use Voyage or Vault if 24″ OC matters.

  • $48-78 per square foot installed depending on line + pattern. A 16×20 (320 sqft) deck in Trailhead with the Contemporary composite rail and 4 stairs lands around $19,000 nationally; the same deck in Voyage with the ALX Aluminum Rail and Drink-Rail Top lands around $32,000. Multiply by ~0.92× South or ~1.28× West Coast. The calculator outputs a project-low to project-high range based on regional labor and contingency.

  • Yes, the 35°F-cooler claim is repeatable in independent testing — mineral-core decking reflects more solar near-infrared than wood-fiber composite, and the lighter overall density also stores less heat. A dark Voyage Carbonized at 90°F sun reads ~145°F surface; a comparably-dark dark Trex Enhance reads 170-180°F. For barefoot-friendly decks in hot climates, Deckorators (and AZEK PVC) outperform wood-fiber composites every time.

  • Deckorators' hidden-fastener clip system for grooved boards. Each box ships 175 clips and covers ~70 sqft at 16″ joist on-center spacing. Box price is $145; loose clips $1.00 each for the partial last box. The clip nests into the board's edge groove and screws into the joist, leaving a clean screw-free surface. Compared to Trex TUHF (180 clips/$110) or AZEK CONCEALoc (90/$85), HiddenLink is per-clip more expensive but covers more sqft per box.

  • ScrewLock is the face-screw alternative — pre-drill the board, screw it down, then press a color-matched plug into the countersunk hole. 50 plugs/pack, $42/pack, covers ~50 sqft. Use it when you want the install speed of face-screws without the visible-screw aesthetic, or when your boards aren't grooved (rare for Deckorators).

  • Voyage is the flagship — multi-width board option (3.5″ + 5.5″ + 7.25″ all in one project for a designer-look deck), deepest color palette including Carbonized smoky charcoal, and the same 50-yr structural warranty as Vault. Vault is mid-tier — solid 5.5″ width, slightly cheaper per linear foot, broader palette in the lighter tones. Both carry the 24″ OC rating. Pick Voyage when you want the multi-width aesthetic; pick Vault when you want Deckorators quality at a lower price point.

  • Trailhead trades $1.50-2.60/lf in materials savings for: (a) a shorter 25-yr structural warranty vs Voyage's 50-yr, (b) loss of the 24″ OC joist rating (Trailhead is 16″ OC like ordinary composite), and (c) smaller stocked-lengths palette (no 20 ft option). On a 320 sqft deck the materials savings is about $700-1000 — if you're keeping the deck 10+ years, spend the extra and go Voyage or Vault. Trailhead works best as a rental-property or budget secondary deck.

  • Three channels: Home Depot stocks Trailhead and partial Vault palettes; Lowe's Pro Desk does full Vault + Voyage special-order with 1-2 week lead; Deckorators Pro Dealers (deckorators.com/find-a-pro) carry the complete palette including all Voyage multi-width SKUs, plus ALX Aluminum Rail in stock.

  • Yes — all three lines' warranties (Voyage 50-yr structural / 25-yr fade, Vault 50/25, Trailhead 25/25) are transferable to a future homeowner. Register at deckorators.com/warranty within 30 days of install for full coverage. Late registration drops the structural warranty by 5-10 years on most lines, so don't skip it.
