IRC 2021 compliance

Joist span 12 ft is within IRC limit

IRC R507.6

Maximum allowed for 2×10 SPF @ 16″ o.c. = 13.0 ft. Using 92% of capacity.

Beam span 8.0 ft exceeds capacity

IRC R507.5

2-ply 2×10 beam max span at 6.0 ft tributary = 7.2 ft. Using 111% of capacity. Try 2-ply 2×12 — supports 8.3 ft at this tributary.

Footing depth 42″ (36″ frost + 6″ margin)

IRC R507.3

Frost line for PA = 36″. DeckMath adds a 6″ safety margin on top of code, so footings stop at 42″ — well below freeze-thaw heave depth. Diameter sized for 2,400 lb tributary load on 1500 psf presumptive bearing (IRC default); soft, organic, or expansive soils may need engineered design.

Decking span 16″ o.c. is within material limit

Manufacturer / DCA-6 Table 5

Trex Enhance maximum joist spacing for parallel install = 16″ o.c. Beyond this the boards will sag/fail between joists.

Post size 6x6 acceptable

IRC R507.4

IRC R507.4 prescribes 6×6 minimum; 4×4 allowed only when deck ≤ 30″ off grade and ≤ 80 sq ft.

How to use

Three steps. Permit-ready output.

  1. 01

    Enter dimensions

Length and width in feet (drag the slider or type). Imperial-metric mix is fine — the calculator handles unit conversion automatically.

  2. 02

    Pick material + framing

Choose decking (PT, cedar, Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, etc.), joist size and species, joist spacing (12/16/24″), and your state for frost depth lookup.

  3. 03

    Read your bill of materials

Live counts and costs update instantly. IRC compliance is checked against actual span tables. Export PDF, print, or copy a shareable link.

Material guide

Wood, composite, or PVC?

Three honest paths. Composite wins the 25-year math for most homeowners, wood wins on upfront cost, and PVC is unbeatable around water. Each card below answers in one glance — recalculate the bill of materials by clicking a brand in the picker above.

Pressure-treated wood

Best for · DIY budget builds
Upfront
$1.85 – $4.10/lf
Lifespan
10 – 15 years
Pros
  • Lowest upfront cost ($15–25/sq ft installed)
  • Universally available — Home Depot, Lowe's, lumberyards
  • Workable with standard fasteners and tools
Cons
  • Annual stain/seal needed (~$0.45/sq ft/yr)
  • Splinters, splits, and warps over time
  • Higher 25-year ownership cost than composite
Try in calculator: PT 2×6 or 5/4×6 deck boards

Composite

Best for · Most homeowners
Upfront
$3.20 – $6.40/lf
Lifespan
25 – 30 years (warranty)
Pros
  • Wash-only maintenance ($0.05/sq ft/yr)
  • Capped polymer surface resists stains, mold, fade
  • Lowest 25-year total cost for most builds
Cons
  • Higher upfront ($28–40/sq ft installed)
  • Hidden-fastener systems take 25% longer to install
  • Can run warm in direct sun (lighter colors mitigate)
Try in calculator: Trex Enhance · TimberTech Prime+ · Fiberon Good Life

PVC (capped polymer)

Best for · Pool & coastal decks
Upfront
$4.65 – $7.20/lf
Lifespan
30+ years (lifetime warranty)
Pros
  • Zero rot, zero mold — fully synthetic core
  • Coolest underfoot of the synthetics (mineral-core lines)
  • Best moisture and salt-spray performance
Cons
  • Highest upfront cost
  • Can move slightly more with temperature swings
  • Color palette narrower than composite

How we calculate

The math, fully transparent.

The Deck Material Calculator gives you a precise count of every board, joist, beam, post, footing, fastener, and hanger you need to build your deck — sized for the dimensions you enter and validated against IRC 2021. Material costs are estimated at national-average retail (Home Depot / Lowe's). All structural assumptions follow IRC R507. The output is permit-ready: bring it to your inspector with confidence.

  • IRC 2021 R507.8 — Posts
  • IRC 2021 R311.7 — Stairways

Decking linear feet
linearFt = (length × width) ÷ board_width × (1 + waste)

Board width is the actual face width (5.5″ for a 5/4×6 or 2×6). Waste covers cuts and pattern overhead — 7% for parallel, up to 20% for herringbone.

Joist count
joists = floor(length ÷ spacing_ft) + 1

Joists run perpendicular to the deck length, spaced 12, 16, or 24 inches on-center. Add 1 to close the bay at the far end.

Beams + posts
beams = 2, posts_per_beam = ceil(length ÷ 8) + 1

Standard residential decks use a ledger at the house and one outboard beam. Posts at ≤8 ft on-center keep beam spans within typical built-up 2-ply 2×10 limits.

Footing concrete
ft³ per footing = π × r² × depth (in) ÷ 1728

Each footing is a 12″ diameter sonotube, depth = max(36″, frost depth + 6″). State-by-state frost depth is looked up from IRC Section R507.5 references.

IRC compliance
joist span ≤ table_max, beam span ≤ table_max, depth ≥ frost

Joist span (your width) is checked against IRC R507.6 tables for size + species + spacing. Beam span is verified against tributary-load adjusted limits. Footing depth must equal or exceed your state's frost line plus a 6″ safety factor.
