How regional labor affects deck cost
Materials prices are roughly national since lumber and decking ship from regional distribution centers. Labor is the variance driver:
- West (1.28×): California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado — coastal cost-of-living + strict permit regimes.
- Northeast (1.22×): NY, MA, CT, NJ, PA, ME, NH, VT, RI — established-trade pricing power.
- Midwest (1.00×): IL, IN, OH, MI, WI, MN, IA, MO, KS, NE, ND, SD — national baseline.
- South (0.92×): TX, FL, GA, NC, SC, TN, KY, AL, MS, AR, LA, VA, WV, OK — lowest labor rates in the US.
Frost depth drives footing depth (and thus footing cost). Northern tier states (MN, ME, VT, ND, MT, WI) require 48-60″ deep footings; southern coastal states (FL, LA, MS, AL) often have 0-6″ frost requirements. This single variable can swing footing cost by $1,500-3,000 on a typical 4-post deck.
