Deck Board Calculator

How many deck boards do you really need? DeckMath returns row count, total board count at the optimal stocked length (8/10/12/16/20 ft), and a separate field vs picture-frame border breakdown. Pattern-aware: straight (0% waste), 45° diagonal (+17%), or herringbone (+32%). 5 material tiers from PT pine ($1.85/lf · DIY) to premium PVC ($5.40/lf · TimberTech AZEK). Cut-waste optimizer flags when a different stocked length would save material — no more butt joints than necessary.

Board layout — straight

26 rows × 5.5″ facePattern waste 0%

Row pitch 5.63″ → 26 rows

Industry-standard milling spec

5/4×6 standard deck board has a 5.5″ actual face. With a 2/16″ gap, every row consumes 5.63″ of deck width. For a 12′ wide deck (144″): 144 ÷ 5.63 = 26 rows.

Stocked length 16′ — optimal for 16′ run

Best-practice deck install

Each row covered by one board (no butt joints) with 2% end-trim waste. Best practice for deck longevity — butt joints are weak points and aesthetic detractors.

Hidden clips — 423 pieces

ICC-ES ESR-1369 / ESR-2944

Composite/PVC grooved-edge profile accepts hidden fastener clips (Trex Universal, TimberTech CONCEALoc, Cortex). 220 clips per 100 sqft per manufacturer spec. No exposed screws on field — face-only on border and starter rows. ICC-ES listed.

How to use

Three steps. Permit-ready output.

  1. 01

    Pick the deck shape + dimensions

    Rectangle (length × width), L-shape (main rect + leg), or U-shape (main + two symmetric legs). Enter feet — DeckMath converts to inches internally for board-pitch math. Boards default to running along the length direction; if you want them to run along the width, swap the values.

  2. 02

    Choose the installation pattern

    Straight is the cheapest (0% pattern waste) and DIY-friendliest. 45° Diagonal adds ~17% pattern waste from triangle cuts at the perimeter and looks high-end on rectangular decks. Herringbone is the most premium pattern (~32% waste from interlocking 45° offcuts) and needs perpendicular blocking between joists per IRC R502.7.

  3. 03

    Select the board profile

    5/4×6 is the dominant deck profile (1″ thick × 5.5″ face). 2×6 doubles thickness for longer joist spans + elevated decks. 1×6 is for porch floors (joist 12″ o.c. max). 5/4×4 narrow-plank (3.5″ face) is a premium look — adds ~27% more boards per area but gives the deck a refined, plank-floor aesthetic.

  4. 04

    Pick material + stocked length

    Five tiers: PT pine ($1.85/lf · DIY), cedar ($4.20 · natural rot-resist), composite mid (Trex Enhance · $3.20), composite prem (Trex Transcend · $4.80), PVC prem (TimberTech AZEK · $5.40). Stocked length 8/10/12/16/20 ft — pick the smallest that fully covers your deck length to avoid butt joints. DeckMath flags when a different length would save waste.

  5. 05

    Add picture-frame border (optional)

    Single border = 1 board ringing the perimeter (most common premium upgrade). Double border = 2 concentric rings for a tray-style look. Border adds ~perimeter LF of boards with 4% miter waste at corners. Reduces field area by the ring depth × perimeter.

How we calculate

The math, fully transparent.

The Deck Board Calculator returns the exact number of deck boards you need for any size and shape — pattern-aware, with optional picture-frame border, and an optimal-stocked-length suggestion to minimise butt joints. Pick deck shape (rectangle / L / U), pattern (straight, 45° diagonal, herringbone), board profile (5/4×6, 2×6, 1×6, narrow 5/4×4), one of five material tiers (PT pine, western red cedar, mid composite Trex Enhance, premium composite Trex Transcend / TT Vintage, premium PVC TimberTech AZEK), and stocked length (8/10/12/16/20 ft). DeckMath returns row count, total board count, hidden-clip + screw count, BoM with regional-labor cost ranges, and a separate field LF vs border LF breakdown. Distinct from the Deck Material Calculator (A.1, MVP) which returns the full structural BoM — this one focuses purely on the deck-surface board count with pattern + cut-waste precision.

2026-Q1 retail pricing: PT 5/4×6 $1.85/lf (Home Depot SYP #1 grade), cedar 5/4×6 clear $4.20/lf, Trex Enhance Basics $3.20/lf, Trex Transcend $4.80/lf, TimberTech AZEK Vintage $5.40/lf. Hidden clips $0.45 ea retail. Stainless deck screws $0.06 ea bulk. Labor figures: $4-7/sqft for board install only (no framing), with pattern multipliers (diagonal 1.3×, herringbone 1.7×). Verified against Trex + TimberTech ICC-ES install spec.

Row pitch
pitch = faceWidth + gap

5/4×6 with 1/8" gap: 5.5 + 0.125 = 5.625" per row. For a 12-ft wide deck (144"): 144 / 5.625 = 25.6 → 26 rows of boards. PT shrinks 1-3% in service, so PT can be installed gap-free with a stainless screw spacer.

Field linear feet
fieldLf = rowCount × runLength × (1 + patternWaste)

For a 16×12 rectangle with 26 rows of 5/4×6 in straight pattern: 26 × 16 × 1.00 = 416 LF. Same deck in diagonal: 416 × 1.17 = 487 LF. Herringbone: 416 × 1.32 = 549 LF — pattern alone adds 32% material cost.

Cut-end waste (butt joints)
cutWaste = (boardsPerRow × stocked − runLength) / orderedLf

If lengthFt = 16 and stockedLength = 16: 1 board per row, ~0% cut waste (just end trim). If lengthFt = 18 and stockedLength = 16: 2 boards per row using 32′ ordered for 18′ used = 44% cut waste — DeckMath flags this and suggests 20′ stocked length (10% waste instead).

Picture-frame border LF
borderLf = perimeter × rings × 1.04

Single border on 16×12 deck: perimeter = 56′ × 1 ring × 1.04 (miter waste) = 58.2 LF of border boards. Double border: 56 + 53.3 (one face inset) = 109.3 LF × 1.04 = 113.7 LF. Use the longest stocked length for borders to minimise joints.

Board count at stocked length
boards = ceil(totalLfOrder / stockedLengthFt)

Total LF / stocked length, rounded up. 487 LF diagonal field + 58 LF border = 545 LF ÷ 16′ = 35 boards (16-ft Trex Enhance composite). Always order 1-2 extra for cutoffs.

Hidden clips count
clips = (fieldSqFt / 100) × 220

Trex Universal / TimberTech CONCEALoc / Cortex hidden-fastener systems use ~220 clips per 100 sqft of grooved-edge composite/PVC. For a 192 sqft 16×12 deck: 1.92 × 220 = 423 clips. Plus 4 starter clips per starting row.
