How to use
How to use the aluminum railing calculator in 5 steps.
- 1
Enter geometry
Level (deck-edge) LF + stair (raked) LF separately. Stair carries 25% material premium + 40% labor premium. Corner count (each adds $175 corner-fitting premium). Stair sections (each adds $95 transition brackets). Post spacing default 6 ft per IRC + most brand engineering manuals.
- 2
Pick brand
Westbury is the volume leader with widest style catalog. AFCO premium with curved-rail capability. Fortress for Home Depot / Lowe's pickup (Al13 Home) or vertical-cable Athens line. Key-Link for longest fade warranty (30 yr AAMA 2604). Wolf for matching Wolf Serenity decks.
- 3
Pick style
Classic (square balusters) 1.0× multiplier — workhorse. Cable 1.40× (horizontal stainless cables, specialty install). Glass 1.85× (12mm tempered panels, premium look). Vertical-cable 1.35× (Fortress Athens exclusive, sometimes R312.1.3-compliant where horizontal cable isn't). Horizontal-rail 1.20× (Westbury Tuscany exclusive). Auto-fallback to classic if brand doesn't carry your pick.
- 4
Pick color + post caps
6 powder colors with AAMA 2604 30-yr fade rating. Sand and almond carry 5% upcharge. Post caps: none (functional flat top), solid ($15/ea, decorative pyramid or ball), or lit LED ($65/ea, plus 12V transformer + cable run separate). Lit caps need solar OR wired low-voltage system.
- 5
Pick install + state
Contractor mode adds full labor at regional rate (NE 1.22× / W 1.28× / S 0.92× / MW 1.00×). DIY mode hides labor cost and shows opportunity cost at $35/hr default. Classic + horizontal-rail are DIY-friendly (click-together kits); cable + glass need specialty install regardless of brand.

2026-Q1 retail kit pricing — manufacturer-authorized dealer + Home Depot / Lowe's averages. Westbury $78/lf · AFCO $82 · Fortress $72 · Key-Link $80 · Wolf $75 (level classic baseline). Style multipliers: cable 1.40× / glass 1.85× / vertical-cable 1.35× / horizontal-rail 1.20×. 42″ guard adds 10% material vs 36″. Stair LF carries 25% material premium + 40% labor premium. Corner premium $175/corner × style multiplier. Stair bracket kit $95/section. Labor by style $22-58/lf × regional (NE 1.22× / W 1.28× / S 0.92× / MW 1.00×). AAMA 2604 powder-coat specification per AAMA standards body.
Brand base $/lf (Westbury $78, AFCO $82, Fortress $72, Key-Link $80, Wolf $75) × style multiplier (classic 1.00 → glass 1.85) × color multiplier (sand/almond 1.05) × height multiplier (42″ guard adds 10% material). Final figure ranges $72-180/lf retail kit pricing depending on choices.
Stair LF carries 25% material premium for pre-cut angle delivery (most aluminum railing manufacturers offer pre-cut stair kits by rake angle — Westbury, AFCO, Key-Link, Fortress all do). The 25% covers the cut-to-spec premium + extra factory time.
Stair install hours are 40% longer per LF — bracket assembly + plumb at angles + return brackets + bottom-of-stair newel. Aluminum stair install runs $32-58/lf vs level $22-36/lf depending on style.
$175 base per corner — extra corner-fitting kit (90° miter + 2 short rail sections + corner post). Multiplied by style multiplier (cable/glass corners cost more). Example: 3 corners × $175 × 1.40 cable style = $735 corner premium.
Same formula as Railing Post calc — 6 ft default OC spacing. Each corner forces a post. Each stair section gets 2 dedicated posts. 50 ft + 3 corners + 1 stair = 8 - 1 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 14 posts. Aluminum posts are surface-mounted with brand-specific base brackets — no notching like wood posts.

People also ask
Aluminum railing questions, answered.
Depends on priorities. Westbury (Digger Specialties) is the industry volume leader with the broadest style catalog — best for shoppers wanting maximum options. AFCO is the premium positioning with the only custom-curved-rail capability. Fortress is best for Home Depot / Lowe's availability + their unique Athens vertical-cable line. Key-Link has the longest fade warranty (30-yr AAMA 2604). Wolf is best when matching Wolf Serenity decking. For most builds: Westbury Veranda C10 in classic style + textured black is the safe answer.
For 50 LF aluminum railing in classic style (3 corners, 1 stair section, mid-tier brand like Westbury at Northeast labor): kit materials $4,160 + corner premium $525 + stair bracket $95 + decorative caps $210 = $4,990 materials + labor $1,650-2,700 = $6,640-7,690 total. Per LF: $133-154 installed. Cheaper brand (Fortress Al13): saves $250. Glass infill: adds $4,500. Cable infill: adds $2,500.
Classic and horizontal-rail styles are absolutely DIY-friendly — click-together post brackets + pre-cut top + bottom rails + stair kits pre-cut to your rake angle. Skill 3 homeowner can install 50 LF in 30-40 hours weekends. NOT DIY-friendly: cable and glass infill — these require tensioning every cable individually (cable) or coordinating glass-panel delivery + fitting (glass). For specialty styles, hire a contractor experienced with the chosen brand.
AAMA 2604 is the American Architectural Manufacturers Association specification for super-durable powder-coat finish — the industry standard for high-end aluminum railing. It mandates: 30-cycle salt spray test, no chalking/fading after 5-year accelerated weathering, 3,500 ASTM impact resistance, no adhesion failure after 1,000 hr boiling water. Key-Link offers 30-yr fade warranty on AAMA 2604 (longest in industry). Westbury, AFCO, Fortress all use AAMA 2604 with 20-yr warranties. Compare to cheaper polyester powder coat (AAMA 2603) at 10-yr warranties — significant durability gap.
Aluminum doesn't rust (no iron content), but the powder coat can chip or peel after decades of UV exposure. AAMA 2604 super-durable polymer coat resists this for 30+ years. Aluminum can pit in marine / salt environments (Key-Link's Coastal Series uses marine-grade aluminum for this) — but bare aluminum corrodes only superficially, never structurally failing like steel rust. Bottom line: aluminum railing typically outlives the deck boards it sits on.
Al13 Home is Fortress' ALUMINUM line — lighter, less expensive, available at Home Depot. FE26 is Fortress' STEEL line — heavier, more durable, more traditional wrought-iron aesthetic. FE26 doesn't share the aluminum line's pre-cut kit system; it requires more welding-skill install. Most homeowners want Al13 for ease of install + powder-coat finish; commercial / heavy-duty applications use FE26. Note: this calculator covers aluminum (Al13) only — for FE26 steel, use the Railing Cost Calculator.
Tricky question. IRC R312.1.3 (4″ sphere rule) was historically interpreted to prohibit horizontal infill due to 'ladder effect' climbing risk. IRC 2021 removed the explicit ladder-climbing language — interpretations vary by jurisdiction. Most state IRC adoptions accept Westbury Tuscany horizontal-rail and Feeney CableRail horizontal at 3″ vertical spacing. SOME jurisdictions (especially CA + HOAs) still prohibit horizontal infill. Fortress Athens VERTICAL cable infill is universally accepted. Verify your local AHJ + HOA before ordering.
Brand-matched railing-to-deck is common: Trex Transcend boards with Trex Transcend Railing (Westbury manufactures), TimberTech boards with TimberTech Drink Rail or RadianceRail (AFCO manufactures), Wolf Serenity boards with Wolf RailRiser. For other deck brands (AZEK, Fiberon, Deckorators) — pick aluminum railing with a black or bronze powder coat that complements the deck color. Black is universal. Bronze warmer with brown-tone decks. White only with white PVC decks. The brand fade warranties on aluminum align with deck warranties (25-30 yr).
35-yr expected lifespan with AAMA 2604 powder coat. Real-world: 25-year-old Westbury installations still serviceable with original finish (some chalking but no structural issue). Aluminum extrusion + stainless fasteners structurally indefinite. Powder coat fade visible at 20-25 yr on darker colors (black holds best); white may yellow slightly. Compare: composite 25-30 yr (cap wear), wood 15-22 yr (refinish cycle + rot risk), PVC 35-50 yr (longest). Aluminum is mid-pack on lifespan but lowest-maintenance (zero refinishing).
Solid decorative caps $15/ea (pyramid, ball, or flat profile, color-matched to powder). Lit LED caps $65/ea — plus a 12V low-voltage transformer ($120-220 for 8-12 cap system) and wiring run from the house. Solar caps $35-55/ea — avoids transformer but requires unobstructed sunlight (often disappointing in shaded yards). For a typical 14-post deck: solid caps $210, lit caps $910 + $180 transformer = $1,090. Caps are pure aesthetics — code doesn't require them.
