TimberTech Reserve FAQ
What makes TimberTech Reserve different from Legacy?
Both are premium PVC capstock from TimberTech (an AZEK brand), but Reserve has a 100% PVC core (Legacy has a wood-flour-filled PVC composite core). Practical differences: Reserve is ~10% lighter, ~5°F cooler in summer sun, completely impervious to moisture (zero swelling, perfect for poolside), and runs ~$1-2/lf more than Legacy. Cathedral grain texture is similar between the two lines — Reserve's is slightly deeper and more pronounced. Both carry TimberTech's 50-year fade/stain + lifetime structural warranty.
Why is Reserve so much cooler than other composites?
Two reasons. (1) The 100% PVC composition reflects more IR than wood-fiber composites (which absorb heat into the wood flour). (2) TimberTech's CoolDeck capstock chemistry uses light-color pigment dispersion that scatters incoming light better. Net result: in identical 90°F direct sun, Reserve runs ~15-25°F cooler than dark Trex Transcend and ~10-15°F cooler than dark Fiberon Concordia. Storm (slate grey) hits ~140-145°F vs dark composite competitors at ~155-170°F.
What are the most popular Reserve colors?
Per TimberTech volume data: Pecan (golden brown) leads nationally at ~25% of Reserve sales — its 'pairs with everything' positioning makes it the safe-choice default. Storm (slate grey) and Antique Leather (cognac) tie for second at ~20% each. Driftwood and Weathered Teak (the cooler / grey colors) together make up ~22%. Mahogany (deep red-brown) is the niche premium pick at ~13% — installed mostly in heritage homes, brick exteriors, and copper-accent designs.
How does Reserve install differently from competitor composites?
Three install specs are different: (1) hidden-clip system is TimberTech CONCEALoc (their proprietary clip, not Trex Hideaway compatible). (2) Expansion gaps need to be slightly larger — 1/4″ per 20 ft of board run vs the standard 3/16″ for Trex. (3) End-cuts can use lighter fastener heads since the PVC core doesn't require the same heavy-duty fastening as wood-composite. Everything else (joist spacing, footings, structural framing) is standard IRC.
Does Reserve really come with a lifetime structural warranty?
Yes — TimberTech's lifetime limited residential structural warranty covers structural integrity for as long as the original homeowner owns the property. Fade and stain coverage is 50 years (also industry-leading). Caveats: the warranty is transferable but drops to 25 years for the second owner; warranty void if installed outside IRC + TimberTech install specs; coverage requires registration within 6 months of install. In practice the warranty has been honored on real-world failure claims dating back to early 2010s installs.
What does Reserve cost installed vs Legacy?
Reserve material: $10-14/lf, installed $20-28/sqft. Legacy material: $8-11/lf, installed $17-23/sqft. For a 300 sqft deck the delta is $900-1,500. Both are well into 'premium tier' territory — only IPE or composite from AZEK Vintage runs higher. Choose Reserve specifically when (a) the deck sees pool / pond water regularly, (b) you want the absolute coolest summer surface, or (c) the home's resale value would benefit from the lifetime structural warranty marketing.
Is Reserve recyclable?
Yes — 100% PVC means it's actually easier to recycle than wood-composite competitors (no need to separate wood flour from the polymer). TimberTech's manufacturing uses ~60% recycled PVC content (mostly post-industrial — vinyl siding offcuts, window-frame waste). End-of-life Reserve boards can be sent back to TimberTech for re-cycling through their AZEK Recycling Program (free freight on truckload quantities). Compared to wood-composite competitors that struggle with end-of-life recovery, this is a real differentiator.
- Standard 3/16″ gap on hot installs — Reserve expands more than wood-composite. Use 1/4″ minimum gap on board runs over 16 ft, especially on south-facing decks.
- Mixing CONCEALoc with off-brand clips — Reserve's groove geometry is proprietary. Trex Hideaway clips physically install but won't lock at warranted spacing — voids the warranty.
- Pre-drilling end-cuts unnecessarily — Reserve's PVC core doesn't require pre-drilling like dense hardwoods. Pre-drilling on PVC actually creates fastener-loosening over time. Direct-drive with TimberTech-spec screws.
