How a hidden clip locks composite boards
Every composite calc page references hidden clips, but almost nothing visualizes the actual mechanism. Watch a Trex Hideaway-class clip slide into a grooved board, get screwed to the joist, then auto-space the next board at 3/16″.
- Grooved board edge geometry (factory-milled channel)
- 304 stainless clip with dual locking tongues
- Color-matched screw driven through clip into joist
- Auto-spaced 3/16″ board gap (IRC R507.6)
- Perimeter row + starter clips (different fasteners)
- AZEK Cortex (face-screw + plug, not a true clip)
- Camo edge-fasteners for ungrooved boards
- Fascia / picture-frame fastener spec

Hidden clip FAQ
How does a composite hidden clip actually work?
The board edges are factory-milled with a horizontal groove that runs the full board length. A flat stainless clip drops into the groove on board #1 with one tongue locked into the groove and a flat base resting on the joist top. A color-matched screw drives through the clip's pre-formed hole into the joist. Board #2 then slides toward board #1; its groove engages the clip's far tongue, automatically locking the second board at exactly 3/16″ from board #1 — no measurement, no spacing tools, no top-down fasteners visible.
Why use hidden clips instead of face screws?
Three reasons. First, appearance: the deck surface is unbroken — no screw heads, no plugs, no holes. Second, expansion: clips lock the boards at a fixed gap that accommodates seasonal expansion/contraction (composite moves ~1/16″ per 10 ft for every 10°F swing). Third, manufacturer warranty: most premium composite warranties (Trex Transcend, TimberTech AZEK, Fiberon Paramount) require approved hidden fastener systems for full coverage. Face-screwing a premium composite often voids the warranty.
How many hidden clips do I need per board?
One clip per joist crossing. With standard 16″ on-center joist spacing and a typical 16-foot board, that's 12 clips per board (one at each joist + 1 at the rim). Order ~1 clip per linear foot of decking (round up). The Hidden Clip Calculator gives an exact count by joist spacing + board length + your chosen brand. Most clips ship in buckets of 90-175.
Are hidden clips compatible across brands?
No — each brand's groove geometry is proprietary. Trex Hideaway clips work with Trex Enhance + Transcend + Signature; TimberTech CONCEALoc with all TimberTech composite + AZEK PVC; Fiberon EDGEXpress with all Fiberon lines; Deckorators stainless with Voyage + Vault. Mismatched clips will physically install but the boards won't lock at the right gap and warranty is void. AZEK Cortex is the exception — it's a face-screw + plug system, not a true hidden clip.
Can hidden clips be used with pressure-treated wood?
No. Hidden clips require a factory-milled groove on the board edge — a manufacturing process only done on capped composite and PVC. Pressure-treated lumber doesn't have grooves and would need to be face-screwed (or hand-routed for groove, which is not practical). If you want a hidden-fastener look on PT wood, the alternatives are Camo edge-fastening (drives screws at an angle through the board edge into the joist) or pre-grooved PT (very rare, expensive).
What screw goes with a hidden clip?
The brand's matched stainless self-drilling screw — typically #8 × 1-5/8″ to 2″ depending on system. Trex Hideaway, TimberTech CONCEALoc, and Fiberon EDGEXpress all ship clips with screws included in the bucket (~90-175 clips + matching screws per bucket). Substituting a generic screw is technically possible but voids the warranty and risks corrosion (clip is 304 stainless; mismatched fastener can cause galvanic corrosion at the joint).
Do hidden clips work over PVC trim or fascia?
No — clips fasten into the structural joist below the deck surface, not into trim or fascia. The fascia (the band that wraps the deck rim) is typically face-screwed with color-matched cap screws. Some installs use a starter clip or biscuit at the perimeter where a board meets the rim joist — check the brand's install manual, as the perimeter row often uses different fasteners than the field rows.
- Mixing brands — Trex Hideaway clips with TimberTech boards (or vice versa) won't lock at the warranted gap. Boards bow, gaps open, warranty void.
- Skipping joist crossings — installing 1 clip every other joist instead of every joist. Boards develop visible deflection between unfastened crossings within a year.
- Substituting screws — using a generic deck screw instead of the brand's matched stainless. Galvanic corrosion at the clip-screw joint stains the board top within 18-24 months.
